Mayanur Pilgrimage

Karur is a beautiful tourist place in the state of Tamil Nadu and what makes it even more beautiful are the sound of the temple bells heard from Mayanur, the pilgrimage place which is home to many of the most revered goddesses and gods of the south. And if you happen to visit Karur you must have Mayanur on the list of places to be visit. Mayanur is a small village in Krishnarayapuram taluk located in the district of Karur on the banks of the river Cauvery. It lies at a distance of 17 kms from the main Karur city on the Karur-Trichy road, right at the centre of Tamil Nadu. Mayanur has mainly two major temples: Sellandiamman temple and Mariamman temple.

Sellandiamman Temple

It is a 2500 years old temple built by the three great dynasties of Karur - The Chera, Cholas and the Pandyas. The goddess here is called as the Madukkarai Sellandiamman. She has her head tilted slightly towards the Cauvery River. Legend has it that the goddess always wanted to see the flow of the river Cauvery, hence the tilted head. Others say that it was one of the Chola Kings who had prayed to the goddess to make his kingdom fertile. So the goddess tilted her head towards the kingdom to hear the prayers of her devotee. Amman is said to hear the prayers and fulfill the wishes of all her people who come to her especially with wedding issues, child birth issues, and property issues.

Mariamman Temple

The Mariamman temple is located in the central part of Mayanur. There are various Mariamman temples spread across the various parts of the state. Moreover what makes Mayanur famous is the grand festival celebrated at the Mariamman temple for 4 long days. This festival is celebrated with lots of grandeur and pomp with people from far away villages and towns travelling and coming here to be a part of the festive celebrations and to receive the blessings of the goddess.

How to reach Mayanur

Trains are the best option to travel to Mayanur. From Karur you can get a passenger train to Mayanur railway station. It would take just up to 20 to 30 mins from Karur to Mayanur via train. Following are the train details:

• Karur-Trichy DEMU train

• Erode-Tiruchirapalli passenger train

However there are bus services too which has newly opened in the year 2013. The bus routes are from Karur to Mayanur via Ranganathapuram.Three trips are operated every week. But buses would take considerably longer time to reach than the train.
