Sellandiamman Temple

Temples in Mayanur

It is a 2500 years old temple built by the three great dynasties of Karur - The Chera, Cholas and the Pandyas. The goddess here is called as the Madukkarai Sellandiamman. She has her head tilted slightly towards the Cauvery River. Legend has it that the goddess always wanted to see the flow of the river Cauvery, hence the tilted head. Others say that it was one of the Chola Kings who had prayed to the goddess to make his kingdom fertile. So the goddess tilted her head towards the kingdom to hear the prayers of her devotee. Amman is said to hear the prayers and fulfill the wishes of all her people who come to her especially with wedding issues, child birth issues, and property issues.

Moreover what makes Mayanur famous is the grand festival celebrated at the Mariamman temple for 4 long days. This festival is celebrated with lots of grandeur and pomp with people from far away villages and towns travelling and coming here to be a part of the festive celebrations and to receive the blessings of the goddess.
